Game Review: Worms
Worms by Team 17
Worms is one of those games that's been around forever. Well maybe not forever, but it's been around for a long time. There have been many revisions to the game over the years, as well as a few new implementations.
Now you can play Worms on your iPhone or iPod Touch. I decided to wait on this one for awhile after reading about performance and control issues. But being the avid Worms fan that I am I just couldn't resist.
In Worms you command a squad of well, worms, against you guessed it more worms. To help you dispatch those other nasty little buggers you are given a wide variety of weapons to choose from. Ranging from explosive sheep, banana bombs, and even the holy hand grenade.
Worms is an artillery game, so you get to decide the best angle and power for each shot. Of course not everything will be dependent on those aspects (explosive sheep, and base ball bat for example). There are changes in wind, as well as health crates and weapon drops (occasionally).
The controls for the game are slightly.. stupid? I suppose they become more useable once you learn them, and I can understand why Team 17 decided to implement them in this manner. To move your worm left or right simply touch the left or right hand side of the screen. To jump tap your worm, and to do a back flip double tap. The weapon selection screen tab is on the left side of the screen while the fire tab is on the right. To aim simply touch and hold on the aiming reticle and move it to the desired location. Finally, to zoom in pinch your screen while doing the opposite will zoom out.
The game offers 7 challenges to work your way through, as well as a quick game, and multiplayer. Personally I found the challenges to be pretty easy. Multiplayer is, well its not true multiplayer thats for sure. Multiplayer in this game is done with 2 people, but on the same device! Also you can only have 2 human players.
The good: I really like Worms so maybe I'm a little biased. But the controls and everything work well, and the graphics sounds and music are very well done.
The bad: I'm a little disappointed about how little content there is to the game. With only 3 game play modes to choose from, and you can only change your arena in multiplayer and practice games.
The breakdown: This game is awesome! I've always had a soft spot for Worms. This game delivers big time! Even with limited content the game still owns! If you are a fan I would highly recommend it. 4.5/5
