Mozart's Dice Game by Andreas Lindahl

newpiece
This musical dice game was published in 1792 and credited to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart a year after his death, although no one knows for certain whether this game was actually created by Mozart. He did enjoy games of this type, however, and had constructed other, similar games.

The game allows you to create a minuet and trio out of 272 different musical measures, an outcome that is determined by rolling dice. For a minuet, roll two six-sided dice and adding the numbers together to select the corresponding measure from the table. For a trio, the only difference is you have only a single die to roll. There are 176 possible minuet measures and 96 trio measures to choose from.

In the app, you do not roll the dice yourself. Each time you press the 'Generate New Minuet and Trio' button, a new piece is generated for you at random. There is nearly endless possibilities for different outcomes — (1116) * (616), to be exact — so you won't ever run out of music.

If I were a bigger fan of classical music, I would probably never get bored with this app. As it is, after a few tries, it began to lose its charm. Sometimes the measures flow perfectly into one another. Most times, though, it's a jarring transition. Recommended for children to play with, or for the classical music buff. It's pretty neat (and free), so I'm giving this one a 3/5.
