In Top Gun, you play the new batch of recruits after the famous Maverick, Iceman and Goose. If you never saw the motion picture, Top Gun is a Navy combat school for high caliber pilots, to help hone their skills. In the game, you are briefed by some of the people from the movie as well as some new faces.

The game is fairly basic; just tilt your device to move your plane, up, down, left, or right. To fire your Vulcan cannon, touch the icon on the left hand side of the screen. Missile control is on the right. You can re-calibrate your sensitivity when you pause the game and press the calibrate button.

There is a special area of the screen that shows where gunfire is directed toward your aircraft. It's called the Danger Zone, and it's just a big box that takes up a portion of your screen and changes colors from yellow (mild danger) to orange (moderate danger) to red (extreme danger).

Top Gun offers 10 missions and several medals to be won. The game goes along on a set path, and you are only given control over the movement of your jet along this path. To be honest, that kinda pissed me off. I'm pretty sure that they could have done a little better about that, but then again I suppose they did the best they could with the options available.

The game can get very repetitive due to the fact that you really have no control over where you go, just the area of the screen where your jet happens to be. Enemy planes will often fly right past you so you can get a shot off at them, and the whole Danger Zone thing really just gets played to death.

The good: Great graphics, sounds, and catchy tunes from the movie.

The bad: Repetitive game play, no real control over where your jet flies (only the on screen positioning, your jet will fly across a set path for each level), calibrator doesn't really work well.

The breakdown: I bought this game due to its great looking graphics, but buyer beware even awesome graphics can't make up for a crappy game experience! At $2.99, I feel a bit ripped off. But because it's Top Gun, and because of its great tunes, I'm giving it a extra point. 3/5
